Humming Tree
Humming Tree is a multidisciplinary architecture and design practice based in Calicut, Kerala, founded in 2016 by Mohammed Afnan and Arun Shekar. The studio operates at the intersection of art, architecture, and design, crafting spaces that are deeply contextual, visually expressive, and rooted in material exploration.
Under the creative direction of its co-founders, Humming Tree approaches every project as a collaborative journey, blending distinct perspectives to create a richer design dialogue. Their process emphasizes an inclusive conversation between context, geometry, and visual identity, resulting in work that resonates with both functionality and artistic expression.
Known for their versatility, the studio thrives on solving complex programs by weaving together user needs, site specificity, and material sensitivity. A key tenet of their philosophy is a deep respect for the passage of time—integrating new interventions thoughtfully with existing environments while celebrating the nuanced qualities of the built and natural context.
At Humming Tree, collaboration lies at the core of both their studio culture and their design methodology. They believe that two diverse sensibilities can offer a more layered, refined outcome, enriching both the creative process and the final experience of space.
The studio continuously seeks to work with like-minded clients and collaborators to create projects and products that make everyday living more inspiring—designed not just to function, but to evoke a feeling of ‘just magnifique’.
Rooted deeply in nostalgia yet crafted for contemporary living, this four-bedroom duplex in the heart of the city reflects a seamless blend of heritage and modernity. For the homeowners, originally from Assam, the breathtaking forest view from the expansive balcony evoked memories of their lush homeland, offering a sense of belonging amidst the urban buzz. The design narrative thoughtfully balances vibrant dramatics with calming elegance — rich terracotta tones in the primary bedroom, soothing blue walls in the living room, and deep wooden flooring that anchors the entire space. Layered lighting techniques ensure a cozy warmth, even in the most dramatic corners. The heart of the home beats with subtle Assamese influences, where hand-beaten brass jaapi art and symbolic motifs create a soulful connection to their roots. A story of past and present coming together, this duplex is not just a home, but an emotional journey brought to life through design.
