The Under Space Revival: Placemaking through Play

In the heart of Surat—a city defined by its layered density and entrepreneurial pulse—an overlooked space beneath a flyover is reimagined as a vibrant, democratic ground for activity and pause. What was once perceived as a remnant of urban infrastructure is now transformed into a lively public realm that fosters interaction, movement, and collective ownership.

Located at one of Surat’s busiest junctions, surrounded by schools, residential buildings, malls, and markets, this flyover under space had long remained underutilized. The design, envisioned for the Surat Municipal Corporation, reframes it as an all-inclusive sports hub, turning an urban leftover into a thriving engine of community life. The intervention is anchored in a belief in urban equity—the idea that beauty, dignity, and accessible public spaces should belong to everyone, not just a privileged few. By activating the underside of infrastructure, the project challenges the conventional neglect of such spaces and reframes them as opportunities for social upliftment.

The design is organized around a fluid pedestrian spine finished with textured stone chips that guide movement while offering anti-skid functionality. Branching off this pathway are micro-cement sports courts—robust, high-performance, and crafted for long-term durability. These activity zones are wrapped within a lightweight envelope of aluminum mesh and polycarbonate sheeting, providing enclosure and a sense of safety while filtering light and reducing noise from the bustling traffic overhead. The result is a breathable, semi-transparent structure that balances protection with openness.

Beyond being a sports facility, the project acts as a catalyst for neighborhood cohesion. It fills a critical void in a dense urban fabric lacking accessible open spaces and sets a benchmark for the adaptive reuse of flyover under spaces in Indian cities. With nominal entry fees, no exclusive memberships, and extended operating hours, the space promotes inclusivity and encourages participation from children, teenagers, working adults, and senior citizens alike.

This intervention represents urbanism at its most human—layered, open-ended, and unafraid to question who cities are built for. In an era dominated by privatized enclaves and gated experiences, the Surat Flyover Under Space stands as a compelling reminder that every overlooked corner of a city carries the potential to become a place of beauty, vitality, activity, and belonging.
