Gopichand Badminton Academy

Inspired by the aerodynamic form of a shuttlecock, The Shuttle stands as a visionary symbol of Odisha’s growing sporting culture. Designed by Archohm for the Dalmia Group, this iconic badminton academy in Bhubaneswar goes beyond being a functional facility — it is an architectural metaphor for movement, resilience, and the boundless spirit of ambition.

Situated at the edge of the Kalinga Stadium complex, The Shuttle rises as a sculptural landmark — one that commands attention while harmonizing with its urban context. The design transforms the simplicity of the shuttlecock into an inverted hemispherical volume, crafted in steel and rooted in concrete. Its bold silhouette, poised between gravity and lightness, mirrors the agility and precision of sport itself. Every curve, joint, and junction has been meticulously engineered to capture the essence of energy frozen in motion.

The architectural narrative unfolds through a dual composition. The lower glass plinth, transparent and inviting, blurs the boundaries between athletes and the community. It houses cafés, lounges, and retail spaces — transforming the academy into a social destination rather than an isolated sports complex. The upper volume, designed as dark box courts, forms a contrasting spatial experience — focused, immersive, and meditative. This contrast between transparency and opacity reflects the athlete’s journey between public celebration and private discipline.

Daylight filters softly through the skylights, while artificial illumination highlights the structure’s form after dusk. As evening falls, the building’s integrated lighting system turns it into a luminous beacon — glowing softly against Bhubaneswar’s skyline, its light symbolizing inspiration and collective pride.

Materiality and structure merge seamlessly to achieve both performance and poetry. The interplay of steel, concrete, and glass evokes a tactile balance between industrial strength and artistic finesse. The design’s thoughtful detailing — from the triangulated framework to the subtle curvature of the façade — ensures that the building remains timeless in both aesthetics and purpose.
