Oasia Hotel Downtown: The Powerful Rise of the Living Façade
If PARKROYAL COLLECTION Pickering terraces the landscape horizontally, Oasia Hotel Downtown pushes greenery vertically.
Also designed by WOHA, the tower is wrapped in a red façade structure that supports climbing plants. Instead of presenting a smooth sealed surface to the city, the building is porous, textured and alive.
WOHA describes the tower as a series of different strata with sky gardens inserted between uses. These elevated landscapes multiply the idea of ground level, creating places for recreation and social interaction far above the street.
The concept is powerful for dense cities: limited land does not always have to mean less open space. High-rise architecture can create new “ground” at different heights. Oasia also demonstrates why vertical greenery must be integrated with structure, shade, wind, irrigation and maintenance from the beginning.
CapitaSpring: A Tropical Forest Inside the Business District
In Singapore’s financial district, CapitaSpring shows how climate-smart high-rise design is moving into major commercial developments.
The 280-metre tower includes a four-storey, 35-metre-high Green Oasis and a rooftop sky garden. CapitaLand says the development has more than 90,000 square feet of landscaped area, equivalent to about 140% of its site area, with more than 80,000 plants from over 130 species.
The Green Oasis is designed to be used, not simply admired behind glass. People can walk, meet, work and pause among tropical plants. Its plant palette also responds to different light levels, using shade-tolerant species where direct sunlight is lower.
CapitaSpring therefore expands the idea of biophilic office design. Nature is not a collection of potted plants placed in a corporate lobby; it becomes part of the architecture and part of the daily workplace experience.
Marina One: Designing the Green Space Between Towers
Marina One, designed by ingenhoven associates with landscape design by Gustafson Porter + Bowman, pushes Singapore’s green high-rise thinking to an urban scale.
Four towers gather around a multi-level landscaped centre known as the Green Heart. The designers describe it as a three-dimensional green oasis reflecting the diversity of tropical flora.
Its importance lies in the space between buildings. Climate-smart design here is not only about reducing the environmental impact of an individual tower. It is about shaping a cooler, greener and more inviting shared environment.
As Asian cities become denser, this may become one of the most important lessons from Singapore architecture: the future of tropical high-rise design depends as much on the microclimate around towers as on the towers themselves.

Why Vertical Greenery Is Infrastructure, Not Decoration
Singapore’s vertical gardens are photographed beautifully, but their real value goes beyond appearance. NParks identifies rooftop and vertical greenery as nature-based strategies that can help reduce the urban heat island effect, improve energy efficiency, reduce stormwater runoff and support biodiversity.
A planted façade, however, needs suitable species, irrigation, drainage, safe maintenance access and enough soil. Trees high above the ground must respond to wind and tropical rain. Singapore remains a heavily air-conditioned city, but climate-smart architecture can reduce how much work mechanical systems need to do.
