Mumbai Gallery "The People of Mumbai"

Curated and designed by Somaya Sampat, The People of Mumbai exhibition at CSMVS is a vibrant, multi-sensory tribute to a city defined by movement, memory, and multiplicity. Spread across 2,423 sq. ft, the exhibition weaves together 117 artefacts across 25 collective stories, capturing the lived experiences of more than 21 million residents who continuously shape Mumbai’s ever-evolving narrative.

Conceived as a non-linear journey, the exhibition reimagines how a city can be interpreted—through emotion, texture, and human connection rather than chronology. Here, Mumbai becomes the archive, its people the text, and the museum a space for dialogue and reflection. Visitors navigate the experience through neon colour-coded zones that serve as both visual anchors and intuitive wayfinding, each capturing a distinct facet of Mumbai’s identity.

The Yellow Zone, A City of Opportunity, radiates optimism, ambition, and possibility. It embodies the magnetic pull Mumbai has long held—a place where dreams are pursued with tenacity, where perseverance becomes a defining language, and where countless journeys begin.

The Orange Zone, City of Migrants, delves into stories of movement, struggle, and adaptation. This space acknowledges the millions who have arrived from across the country, bringing with them cultural layers that continue to reshape the city. Through artefacts, soundscapes, and evocative imagery, it honours their resilience.

The Pink Zone, City of Cosmopolitanism, celebrates Mumbai’s pluralistic spirit. It reflects the city’s unmatched cultural exchange—its openness to difference, its seamless blending of traditions, and its ability to create harmony within chaos. This zone becomes a portrait of coexistence, energy, and shared identity.

The journey culminates in Cyborgbay: The Future of Mumbai, a darkened, light-controlled chamber imagining a technologically integrated future shaped by artificial intelligence, robotics, and cyborg existence. Here, the city becomes a metaphor for reinvention and forward momentum, mirroring Mumbai’s constant state of becoming.

Across all zones, archival research, projections, tactile materials, and immersive soundscapes merge to create emotionally resonant environments. Each space evokes the pulse of neighbourhoods, the memory of streets, and the layered identities that define the metropolis.

Together, these experiences craft a sensory portrait of Mumbai—vibrant, contradictory, aspirational, and deeply human. A city that never stops, yet always remembers.
