Founded in 1989 by Tony Joseph, STAPATI is a collaborative architecture studio rooted in craftsmanship, integrity, and contextual sensitivity. The firm blends regional narratives with contemporary design, creating timeless, immersive spaces—from resorts to public projects—where architecture, culture, and environment harmoniously intersect through skill, artistry, and thoughtful collaboration.
The Nirava Ayurveda Holistic Centre in Chingoli, Alappuzha, Kerala, designed by Stapati, Bangalore, spans approximately 21,000 sq. ft. and is envisioned as a sanctuary where healing and serenity converge. Part of the acclaimed Krishnendu Ayurveda Hospital, the centre embraces Ayurveda’s philosophy of balance, offering a restorative retreat deeply connected to its natural surroundings. The masterplan is organized into two distinct yet harmonious volumes: a villa block comprising twelve guest rooms and a curved spa block housing therapy suites, each strategically sited around mature trees to preserve the existing landscape and foster a tranquil atmosphere.
The spa block’s sweeping arc, clad in slender vertical fins, filters soft, dappled light into the interiors, creating calm, meditative spaces. Each therapy suite is designed to maximize privacy while maintaining a visual and sensory connection with nature. The villas open to private garden-facing sit-outs, with full-height sliding doors inviting daylight and cross-ventilation, ensuring each room feels spacious, airy, and intimately connected to its surroundings.
Materiality is thoughtfully curated to reflect Kerala’s vernacular architecture while incorporating contemporary sensibilities. Locally sourced laterite, warm timber, and hand-crafted details provide textural richness, complemented by clean modern lines that bring refinement to the spaces. Interiors are characterized by earth-toned feature walls, teak joinery, louvered shutters, and woven cane seating, blending tactile warmth with minimal sophistication. Exposed concrete ceilings and stone floors maintain a cool palette, softened by hand-loom rugs, while bathrooms feature floating timber vanities, framed landscape views, and operable shutters to balance openness with privacy.
Circulation between spaces is seamless, with covered walkways, gentle ramps, and slate-like flooring integrated with pebble drains, ensuring comfort across seasons. The interplay of natural light, ventilation, and materiality creates an immersive sensory experience that encourages relaxation, reflection, and wellbeing.
Together, the villa and spa blocks embody a harmonious dialogue between tradition and modernity, offering a nature-led, restorative experience. The Nirava Ayurveda Holistic Centre stands as a model of thoughtful, contextual design, where vernacular warmth meets precise contemporary detailing, providing guests with a sanctuary that nurtures body, mind, and spirit.
