Located in northern Malabar, a short distance from the Mahe Bridge, this twelve-cent site presented both a design challenge and an opportunity. Elevated above the access road and positioned beside the client’s sister’s home, the project demanded a sensitive and inclusive architectural response—one that would nurture harmony between the two residences while embracing the natural contours of the land and its tropical context.
The client envisioned a tranquil family home immersed in greenery, with spaces that felt open yet intimate. The program included four bedrooms with attached baths, two living areas, a dining space connected to a verandah and courtyard, a prayer room, a kitchen with store and work areas, and an open terrace. The design approach centred on crafting a sequence of interconnected spaces that deliver varied spatial experiences while maintaining fluidity, ventilation, and visual openness throughout.
Vehicular entry is from the south through a recessed gate and a landscaped driveway that establishes a welcoming buffer from the main road. The home faces east to create a visual and emotional connection with the sister’s residence. An open entrance courtyard strengthens this relationship, allowing shared views and interaction across both properties. The kitchen and utility spaces occupy the northeast corner, where they benefit from gentle morning light. Running east to west, the circulation spine forms the home’s central energy axis, marked by permeable walls, operable windows, and thoughtfully placed courtyards that draw nature indoors.
Architecturally, the residence adopts a minimal tropical vocabulary rooted in lightness and climate sensitivity. Two linear blocks extend along the length of the site, connected by a central corridor that remains bright and airy throughout the day. Lush gardens wrap around the building, softening edges and nurturing a constant dialogue between built and natural elements. The entry foyer leads seamlessly to semi-public spaces in the south, while private areas are positioned to the north for comfort and seclusion.
The dining area becomes the heart of the home, opening fully to gardens on both sides to create a seamless indoor-outdoor transition. The open plan ensures efficient spatial distribution while maintaining intimacy through courtyards, layered views, and modulated transparency—resulting in a home shaped by climate, context, and quiet connection.
