Fonte d’Amore

Fonte d’Amore, meaning “Fountain of Love,” transforms memory into architecture. Conceived as a husband’s wedding gift to his wife, this intimate courtyard home in Delhi becomes an architectural ode to their shared travels. It poetically reimagines the moment they tossed a coin into Rome’s Trevi Fountain, capturing emotion in built form. Designed by Manish Gulati, Principal Architect at M:OFA Studio, the residence blends the disciplined order of the Renaissance with the fluid organic spirit of Gaudi, creating a union of history, sentiment, and innovation.

The design journey began with a series of AI generated mood studies inspired by the dramatic contours of the Trevi Fountain. These digital explorations acted as conceptual triggers, guiding the sculptural geometry of the home. Gulati invited Delhi based artist Shersingh, a craftsman from a lineage of traditional artisans, to interpret these digital cues into physical artworks. His hands reintroduced the warmth of human craft, creating a dialogue between algorithm and artistry reminiscent of Catalan vaults or Mughal pietra dura.

At the centre of the home lies a soaring five storey courtyard, a cocoon where light, water, air, and stone share an uninterrupted conversation. Arches rise from Renaissance inspired bases and gradually dissolve into gentle catenary curves, giving the space a dreamlike presence. A central fountain grounds the experience. Its mist cools the air as jasmine creepers climb the curved walls. Circular oculi filter daylight, casting shifting patterns that animate the stone. During the day, sunlight sweeps across the surfaces in fluid rhythms. At night, moonlight turns the courtyard into a silent sanctuary.

Every element appeals to the senses. The sound of falling water, the texture of chiselled stone, the movement of air, and the scent of blooming jasmine evoke quiet reflection. Passive cooling strategies including wind catchers, evaporative mist, and carefully placed apertures create a comfortable microclimate, offering gentle relief from Delhi’s heat.

Fonte d’Amore is an exercise in restraint, where technology amplifies emotion instead of overpowering it. Both contemporary and timeless, it becomes a meditation in form and feeling. It stands as a living dialogue between memory and place, craft and innovation, love and life.
