A Design Co. (ADC) is a Chennai-based multidisciplinary studio founded in 2014 by Gowri Adappa and Nikhith Ashok. Specializing in architecture and interior design, the firm works across diverse typologies, blending innovation, functionality, and context to craft thoughtful environments for living, working, learning, and leisure with enduring design quality.
In this reimagined Mumbai apartment, design becomes a process of transformation — not just spatially, but emotionally. What began as a standard four-bedroom layout has been thoughtfully reinterpreted into a two-bedroom sanctuary for a young couple, reflecting their lifestyle, aspirations, and love for timeless, functional beauty. The home now celebrates openness, intimacy, and balance — blurring boundaries between spaces while maintaining a sense of calm order.
The architects removed partitions to create a free-flowing plan that connects different zones with effortless continuity. The foyer, wrapped in rich walnut paneling, acts as a serene prelude to the interiors. Everyday elements such as the powder room, electrical board, and shoe rack are cleverly concealed within sleek joinery, allowing the materiality to take center stage. From this warm entryway, the home extends in two distinct directions — to the left lies an open ensemble of social areas, including the lounge, entertainment zone, breakfast bar, and cocktail room; to the right unfolds a quiet retreat comprising the guest and master suites.
Mid-century modern principles form the foundation of the design language, where tactile woods, linear forms, and iconic furniture establish timelessness. A glass-brick wall filters sunlight into the social areas, infusing them with a diffused glow. Within this zone, a vintage Le Corbusier chaise lounge becomes a sculptural centerpiece, harmonizing with the polished stainless-steel surfaces of the adjoining kitchen. The dialogue between industrial precision and handcrafted warmth runs through the apartment, balancing modernist clarity with Indian material sensitivity.
The master suite, born from two merged bedrooms, is envisioned as a tranquil refuge. A California king bed with a checkered headboard, graceful archways, and glass-paneled doors leading to the ensuite and walk-in wardrobe lend a sense of quiet sophistication. A palette of soft neutrals, gentle lighting, and warm timber continues throughout, enhancing a feeling of seamless unity.
Every crafted detail — from bespoke millwork to the sculptural bathtub — speaks of restraint, depth, and material honesty. The apartment ultimately transcends stylistic boundaries, blending mid-century elegance, industrial sharpness, and local artistry into a living space that feels curated yet deeply personal — tactile, timeless, and utterly its own.
