Founded in 1996 by architects Amit Aurora and Rahul Bansal, groupDCA is a New Delhi-based multidisciplinary firm known for climate-appropriate, eco-conscious design. With projects across India and abroad, the studio integrates craftsmanship, sustainability, and innovation across architecture, interiors, and retail, delivering bespoke, timeless solutions that balance context, creativity, and integrity.
Marking its 27th year, groupDCA embraces a new chapter with its eco-conscious studio in Gurugram—a serene retreat designed to nurture creativity and collaboration in close dialogue with nature. Relocated from the bustling lanes of Sultanpur to the lush expanse of Gwal Pahari, the new studio spans over 19,000 sq. ft., unfolding as a cluster of four low-rise blocks interwoven with the landscape. Each block—housing workstations, principal offices, meeting rooms, lounges, and a cafeteria—has been carefully positioned along the east-west axis to optimise natural light and ventilation.
The material palette celebrates regional identity and sustainability. Rubble masonry, terracotta flooring, and thatched roofs not only ensure climatic comfort but also root the architecture in local vernacular traditions. The fragmented layout encourages movement and discovery—linking the built forms through shaded verandahs, open spillouts, and organic pathways that create moments of pause, reflection, and casual interaction. This spatial fluidity makes the studio feel like a living organism—constantly evolving and engaging with its environment.
The interiors are imbued with a sense of warmth and familiarity, balancing the tactile richness of locally sourced materials with modern spatial efficiency. Repurposed collectibles, handcrafted furniture, and artisanal details add a distinct character to the spaces, reflecting the studio’s deep respect for craftsmanship and heritage. Thoughtful passive design strategies—such as cross-ventilation, rainwater harvesting, and natural shading—further reinforce the project’s commitment to sustainability and reduced carbon impact.
Beyond its architectural ingenuity, the studio embodies groupDCA’s ethos of human-centric design. Every corner is designed to inspire creativity, foster community, and celebrate the symbiotic relationship between people and place. The open courtyards invite spontaneous dialogue; the lounges and cafeteria promote social connection; and the seamless blend of indoors and outdoors nurtures well-being.
